Talk on Wednesday 28th August 2024 at 8pm, Barney Hughes ‘The Baker’
Our next talk of the year is on Barney Hughes, ‘The Baker’. It will be delivered by our own James Kane.
Bernard ‘Barney’ Hughes was born in Armagh on the 8th of July 1808. He started to serve his 6-year apprenticeship at 12 years old in Armagh City. He spent the final two years of his apprenticeship working and living in Blackwatertown and migrated to Belfast via the Blackwater River, Lough Neagh, and the Lagan Canal in 1826. He started his bakery in December 1840, and it was an immediate success. By 1842/3, he had the largest and most modern bakery in Belfast. He played a huge part in feeding Belfast during the Famine years of 1845-49. It was during the Famine that Barney created a standardised bread bap, which he sold at a reasonable price. This bap became known as the Belfast bap.
